Peter of the Greek island of Mykonos is probably the world’s most famous pelican; like a regular celebrity, he loves getting tidbits from locals and posing for tourists. One day he receives a visit from Yiorgos, Pavlos and Aka. But the four friends’ pleasant weekend together comes to an abrupt end when they discover a dangerous oil spill in the sea around the island. They must do something and fast. The appearance of a mysterious woman with red hair and a lovely voice further complicates the issue. Peter the Pelican’s Summer is a moving and often funny children’s book attempting to raise environmental awareness and instill respect for nature.

Sophia Kalantzakos

Sophia Kalantzakos studied at the University of Yale and the University of Columbia. She currently divides her time between the Greek capital of Athens and the province of Messinia, which she represents in the Greek Parliament as an MP. She lives with her husband Philipos, his daughter Alexandra and their dog Matie. Sofia Kalatzakou appreciates the purity and unpretentiousness of children’s heroes, while she admires children’s insight and their desire to change the world. Her main purpose in writing this book was to raise awareness on environmental issues.

Four picture books illustrated by Effie Lada have just been published by the Chinese publisher Shanghai 99 Culture Consulting CO.! Three stories based on traditional tales, "Teardrop's Feat", "The Tower Manuscripts" and "Mary and the Sugarplum Man" by author Athina Biniou, and "The Birthday of the Infanta", Oscar Wilde's story retold by the illustrator.
