Alexandrian Days

Greek tobacco manufacturer Anthony Haramis lives with his wife Daphne and their two children in Alexandria's aristocratic district, the Quartier Grec, trapped inside the strict social confines of the Greek community. His business dealings with a mysterious Lebanese man, Elias Huri, will give him the opportunity to sign an exclusive contract with the British army in the Middle East on the day when World War I breaks out, but will also especially free him from the moral stranglehold of family life: Huri's mediation will lead to a budding love affair between him and the exquisite Swiss-French Yvette Chanton. A story spanning fifty years, where war and trade, politics and love, colonisation and nationalism clash with unexpected consequences. The Nasserist purges are simply the culmination of the agonizing exodus of the Egyptian Greeks and other foreigners from the once hospitable country of the Nile.
