This year, his parents tell Isidore, money is short. His father is an architect whose business has been hit by a downturn in the construction business, so the family won't be able to afford their usual summer vacation on the island of Serifos.

What land of holidays can a boy of 9 have at home on the fourth floor of an Athenian apartment? Isidore the castaway in search of answers. The castaway is an imaginary character who sends real answers to the letters Isidore sends him by bottle. In fact, as he discovered the last time he was in a fix, the castaway is his father, but it's become a game in which the two of them keep up the pretence. A letter sent by bottle to the castaway to confide his woes prompts a suggestion: Why not turn your home into an island? Starting with tips from the castaway and adding his own ideas, Isidore creates his own downtown riviera.

Amanda Michalopoulou

Amanda Michalopoulou was born in Athens, in 1966. She studied French Literature at the University of Athens and journalism in Paris, at the CFPJ.

Since 1990 she has been working as a columnist in the daily Greek newspaper Kathimerini. In 1994 she published her first short stories collection “Life in colorful outside”. One of these stories represented Greece in the “Lisbon Biennale for European Creators”. Another story was awarded a first short story prize by the literary magazine “Revmata”.

She won a major literary prize in 1997 for her bestselling first novel “Yandes (Wishbone memories)”, written during a residency grant in Wiepersdorf, Berlin. She has also published the novels “As often as you can bear it” (Kastaniotis Publishers 1998), and “Bad Weather” (Kastaniotis 2001). She published children’s books also: “The flying house” (Ammos Publishers) and the series “Family Gallery” about contemporary art and contemporary family life (Patakis Publishers, 2000).

Her books are published in German by Rotbuch Verlag and in Italian by Crocetti. Her short stories are translated in English, German, Italian, Serbian and Czech.

Three stories based on traditional tales, "Teardrop's Feat", "The Tower Manuscripts" and "Mary and the Sugarplum Man" by author Athina Biniou, and "The Birthday of the Infanta", Oscar Wilde's story retold by the illustrator.
